The subject building was designed in 1909/1910 by Viennese Architect Emile Bressler for the Dreher family and was used as a restaurant until 1926. In 1928 it was refitted by the Trieste architect Gustavo Pulitzer-Finaly .
In that year the Trieste stock exchange moved to the former “Dreher Palace,” which from that time was also called the “New Stock Exchange Palace.”
Theodor Dreher decided to commission the associated firm of architects Bressler & Wittrisch of Vienna to build an elegant restaurant with a rooftop terrace. The two designers include Emil Bressler, who was a collaborator of Ludwig Baumann, a prominent Viennese architect who made the recovery of historical styles (historicism) and their mixture (eclecticism) the basis of his creativity. Indeed, the design of the building is conceived in pure eclectic style with a mixture of Mannerist and Baroque elements. Again, the facade of the building did not please the Technical Office of the Civic Magistrate, which found the decorative part too uncertain. Having made the necessary changes, construction of the building began in 1908 and was completed in 1910. The building contemplated on the ground floor the restaurant rooms, kitchens, warehouse, and business activities; on the first and second floors the reception hall, party rooms, and offices; on the third floor the manager’s living quarters; and on the fourth floor the men’s and women’s service quarters.
But the real “attraction” was the observation deck, served by two elevators, a 200-pound beer hoist, and two
100-pound dumbwaiter. This room was frequented by the best Trieste society of the time, especially during performances at the nearby Theater. It is said that the orchestral players played to notify the audience, quietly sitting around drinking beer and eating ice cream, of the end of intermission. (1)
